Learn To Interview

May 31st, 2008 · No Comments

You can lean how to give a good job interview the same you you learned how to get good at playing golf or any other sport. You practice a lot.

Professional golfer, Tiger Woods, didn’t learn how to putt by playing in the Master’s tournament. Tiger wood’s background was filled with practice. He practiced alone. And a lot. When the golfer mastered the use of his putter, he entered competition.

You haven’t earned the right to compete at interviews until you’ve practiced a lot and have mastered the use of your interview skills. Those skills include rehearsing how to answer those tough interview questions we’ve been discussing here on Your Career Service. You can visit our blog archive on the left side of this site for quick reviews of topics covered.

The two questions you need to rehearse a lot –

1.”Why are you looking for a job?” (Or, “Are you still working at the XYZ company)?” You need to respond with a cover story. It explains reasons why you’re out looking for work.

2. “Tell me about yourself?” where you present short success stories about how you used certain skills to benefit your previous employer.

How to rehearse

A nice, no stress way to rehearse parts of your interview is to use the nickel and dime technique. Which means practicing during that five minute drive to the store. Or a ten minute walk to the bus. Along with the nickel and dime approach, you can choose from several other best bets for interview prep.

Preparing is so important that Aesop explained it to children. In Aesop’s story about the Ant and Grasshopper, the legendary composer of fables had this to say -

“It is best to prepare for the days of necessity.”

So practice a lot for your days of necessity - interview days. To give a good interview, you need to practice, practice, practice
