The London Eye A Place Of Breath Taking Views

June 13th, 2008 · No Comments

In a nation that is fiercely protective about its history and heritage this newest addition to the London skyline overlooking the historic Thames River is significant for its widespread public acceptance. The British are usually heavily critical against modern landmarks yet eight years after the London Eye was erected it has become what the Eiffel has become to Paris and what the Empire State Building is to New York.

London being a city that is steeped in history it is astonishing that the London Eye has become in its very short life span the most visited tourist attraction in the city. The 3.5 million tourists that are drawn to this masterpiece of modern engineering and architecture are testament to the fact that Brits are not as boring as we think they are. In all fairness they have welcomed what many thought they would be opposed to a giant steel wheel right next to a world heritage site-The Palace of Westminster, it doesn’t complement the historic buildings of London but provides a modern 21st century interlude to a London full of gloomy buildings.

In a way the London Eye could be termed a quintessential British landmark, it represents some of the most loved characteristics of the country, its cutting edge, iconic and in true Brit fashion lovably eccentric. Visitors to the London Eye on a clear summer’s day can see the beautiful scenery of their surroundings to a distance of 25 miles. Attached to the wheel which is incidentally the tallest observation wheel in the world at 443 feet, are 32 glass compartments. There is a wooden bench at the middle of the compartment but for the best views standing is the best. The rotation is slow and smooth so no need to worry about motion sickness, the ride actually is so smooth that the wheel doesn’t stop to load or unload passengers. The speed of rotation is slow enough to allow people to get on or off whilst the wheel is turning.

Due its location the London Eye is close to most major London hotels. The close proximity of the London Eye to many other tourist attractions and also the London Eye river tour on the Thames makes it a must see attraction for visitors to London. Luxury Hotels in London are also located close by.
